Now comes the hard part! So, you thought getting your website online was difficult? Now how do you get people to visit? This part is by far going to take the most time and is a never ending job. Getting visitors to you site is called getting TRAFFIC. The more traffic you have visiting your website the higher the chances of someone purchasing something from your website. Just like the concept of having those huge billboard signs on the freeway, those are placed on highly trafficed freeways hoping a percentage of drivers will see their add and make a purchase. There are many many different wasy to generate traffic to your website. We are going to over a few of them below to get your started.

TRAFFIC

The following is a list of the basic types of sites and traffic you can generate.
Free Sites vs. Pay Sites

Free sites are where most beginning webmasters (newbies) start off. A free site can range from one page to multiple pages. Depending upon the type of traffic (see below) you are trying to generate your site may consist of thumbnail galleries, free pictures, search engine keywords or any other content that you choose to offer. In addition to any content you have on your free site; you will want to include some sort of revenue generators. These normally come in the form of affiliate links/banners. Affiliate links/banners are a way for you to earn money through an affiliate program. Affiliate programs are a group of pay sites and/or products that will pay you to send them traffic.

Pay sites are a little more complicated and require more startup revenue. Most pay site owners started as free site builders and worked their way up. Pay sites will normally contain a free tour area to entice the surfer to join the members’ area of the site. In order to join the members’ area, the surfer is required to pay a set fee. This fee is usually recurring on a monthly basis. Most pay sites have an affiliate program (see above) where they pay webmasters to send them traffic. There are several ways to pay for this traffic including pay per click, revshare and pay per signup.
Major Traffic Sources

Gallery Traffic:
Thumbnail Gallery Posts are both a good and a bad thing. On one hand they can generate a large amount of traffic and the supplies surfers with a large amount of free content.

To begin you will create a gallery of thumbnails that link to a large pic. In addition, your gallery will include revenue generating ads. Each gallery post has specific rules as to how many pics and what size they require for listing. Once your gallery is ready you will want to begin submitting to gallery posts. Follow the rules! You will want to build strong relationships with these gallery posts for future submits.

SE Traffic:
Getting started in the search engine game is a huge step. There is no specific method that we can give you. It is simply a matter of trial and error. First and foremost, your site needs to be optimized for search engines prior to submitting. Once you have optimized your site and prioritized your keywords, you will want to hand submit your site. Don’t use an automated system it will do more harm than good. Now it is time to wait and see, do not continue to resubmit. Again, it will only do more harm than good. After a month, if your site is still not listed you can resubmit again. Do not remove your page downtime is NOT good. Remember search engines are trial and error. Do not get frustrated, this will take time to “master”.

Pay Per Click Traffic:
Search Engines are a huge gamble. You never know if your site will get listed and if it does, under what keywords. Pay per click traffic evens out the game. You can purchase clicks for specific keywords and use the traffic as a gauge to see how your site will convert.

Link Trades:
Link Trades can be very advantageous in building traffic to your site. Link trades can increase your search engine relevancy, page rank and overall traffic numbers.

Once you have finished your site and you have successfully generated some traffic (a couple hundred hits per day should be enough) you can begin trading links with sites similar to yours. Before you begin requesting link trades, you will want to create a page specifically for link trades (http://www.yourdomain.com/links.html). This does not mean you cannot have link trades on other pages of your site. This is just a good starting point. Start researching sites that are similar to yours in both content and size. As your traffic builds so will your link trades. Contact these sites via email asking if they would be interested in trading links with your site. It is a good idea to go ahead and add their site to your links page prior to contacting them. This shows that you are dedicated to a fair trade. Don’t get disappointed if you do not get a response to your first email. If at first you do not succeed try, try again!
